The day-after wedding party, called poprawiny in Poland, is a tradition coming back in a new form. Instead of a second full wedding, more and more couples choose a relaxed lunch or barbecue the day after the ceremony. Below we show how to plan it so it is a pleasant ending, not another marathon.
Do you need a day-after party at all
There is no obligation. It makes sense when many guests travel from far away and stay overnight anyway, or when the wedding left too little time to talk with your closest people. If most guests live nearby, you can skip it or keep it to a small circle.
Who to invite
The day-after party usually brings together close family, the witnesses and out-of-town guests, often 20 to 60 people. Mention it in the wedding invitation, so guests can plan their stay and journey home.
When to start
After a wedding that lasted until dawn, nobody has energy for the morning. A start between 1 pm and 3 pm and 4-6 hours of party works best. Out-of-town guests can then leave before dark.
A day-after menu
This is not a second wedding banquet. Simpler formats work well:
- lunch - a soup, one main course, cake,
- barbecue - in summer on a terrace or in a garden,
- buffet - cold starters, salads, something warm and coffee.
Some couples use the leftover wedding cake and pastries, which keeps the cost down.
Same venue or a different one
Holding it in the same hall as the wedding is simplest, but not always possible, because large wedding venues have another event booked. A smaller venue for the second day can be better: it feels cosier and costs less to hire. What matters is that it is close to where guests are staying.
A programme without a programme
The day after needs no host or traditional games. Background music, looking at the first wedding photos together and time to talk are enough. If there are children, a play area helps, ideally outdoors.

Who pays for the day-after party?
Traditionally the couple or their parents, as for the wedding. More and more often it is a separate, smaller item in the budget.
Do you invite all wedding guests?
You do not have to. Most couples invite family and guests who are staying nearby.
Can the party be on a different date than the day after?
Yes. Some couples hold a get-together a week or two later, for example with a showing of the wedding photos and video.
